From the market town of Wirksworth walk SE in pleasant Derbyshire countryside via Gorseybank to Alport Height and back via Breamfield. Alport has panoramic views -weather dependent. This is not mountainous country but there are some hills from which to enjoy the views. Walk is given as 9m but will be between 8 - 10m.
The area has Neolithic and Bronze Age remains, including a woolly mammoth. Wirksworth is listed in the Domesday Book but the town charter goes back to 835AD, and market charter to 1306. It's known for its lead-mining history, so spare a few minutes before or after the walk to look in the church for the plaque of "T'Owd Man", an ancient lead-miner with his pick and basket. It's thought to be the oldest image of a lead-miner.
