We leave the car park and follow the line of the old railway to West Wylam Bridge (aka Points Bridge, Half moon Bridge). We then follow the river up stream on the south bank to Ovingham Bridge, returning via the Spetchells, Hagg Pond and Meadows, climbing the steps to Hagg Bank, then return back over W W Bridge, and down to the river, following the path downstream back to Wylam.
(‘The Spetchells’ are a large heap of chalk waste forming a walkable small hill, left after the manufacture of ammonia sulphate which was used for fertiliser and explosives, during WW2).
Terrain: Tarmac tracks, grassy footpaths. One short moderate steep incline and a steep flight of irregular steps. Winter conditions may cause the route to be adjusted on the day.
Refreshments: Short stop near Ovingham Bridge (toilet facilities available). Advisable to bring hot drink if weather conditions wintry. There are also Pubs and cafe situated in Wylam at the end of the walk.
