Overview

This walk takes in three villages - Tockwith, Long Marston and Bilton in Ainsty - and skirts around a fourth, Healaugh. It is largely flat and mostly on field paths and farm tracks. There is, however, just over a mile of road walking at the beginning as we cross Marston Moor, passing the site of a major Civil War battle in 1644. Field paths then take us into and out of Long Marston on our way towards Healaugh Grange. Lunch is expected to be near here, after which we set out for Bilton in Ainsty. We walk through the centre of the village and will probably have a brief stop at the church. Finally, as we approach Tockwith, there is Sandhole Wood, where, according to its information board, Ainsty Conservation Society has tried to create “a cosmetic representation of an ancient woodland”.

Air crash memorial, Marston Road, Tockwith Coming from Long Marston, the memorial is on the left about 200 metres west of Kendal Lane, which is on the right, and just after the bus stop at Ralph Garth. It’s a brick pillar with a model of an aeroplane on top of it. Coming from Tockwith village centre, it’s on the right just before a children’s playground (on the left).
