Working with communities

Supporting health, wellbeing and connection in your community

Walking makes life better. It boosts our health, improves our mood and helps bring communities together.

That’s why we support community groups and local organisations to deliver welcoming, inclusive walking initiatives that help people feel healthier, happier and more connected.

By combining our walking expertise with your local knowledge, we can help more people enjoy the benefits of being outdoors.

How we work with communities

Every place, and every community, is different. So, we actively engage, listen and learn from communities across Britain and work with them to develop new approaches that support people to walk outdoors.

Together with local partners, we shape schemes around local needs, interests and priorities. Here's a taster of the type of work we have done with communities:

  • Training for local people to lead inclusive, community-led walks.
  • Set up short, friendly walks that support health and connection.
  • Delivered the Out There Award, a two-day programme for 18- to 26-year-olds that builds confidence in the outdoors
  • Improved local paths so they're safer and more accessible for all.
