A strenuous and long walk over an area that used to be a difficult and wooded bog used as a refuge by Border Reivers when fleeing their enemies.
Starting from the Kiln Green we walk uphill through the town, past the golf course and get to the MacDiarmid Memorial. A short walk along the road takes us to a kissing gate where we climb onto Terrona Hill and Muckle Knowe. We eventually reach Hogg Fell 371m (1217ft). We then descend and have a short walk through a wood before dropping further towards Tarras Water. We follow the Valley down until we reach a picnic area near the Newcastleton road. We then follow the road, unfortunately uphill(!) to return to Langholm. The walk would usually drop further south along tracks before looping back to the road but the time of year we are walking coincides with the nesting season so that section is omitted.
Good chance of seeing feral goats on the upper reaches of this walk. Great views, weather permitting. This is Scotland in springtime so expect underfoot to be quite wet on all off-road sections of the walk.
Plenty of places to eat and drink in Langholm and there are toilets at the Kiln Green carpark.
