Overview

A new event for the Uttlesford Ramblers: Walk & Punt

We'll meet outside Cambridge train station at 10.00 a.m. to coincide with the 9.53 a.m. train arrival from Bishop's Stortford, Stansted Mountfitchet, Newport, Audley End, etc. and meet up with participants not arriving by train at Scudamore's Punt Hire at Mill Pond at 10.30 a.m.

There, we'll split the group in two. One group will punt from Cambridge to Grantchester and the other group will walk to Grantchester, largely following the river. We'll meet up for lunch at the Grantchester Orchard Tea Gardens. [They serve cakes and small bites only.] Following a leisurely lunch we'll swap groups and punt/walk back to Mill Pond.

The walk from Mill Pond to Grantchester is approx. 2.5 miles and the walk from the station to Mill Pond is approx. 1.5 miles each way, for a total of 5.5 - 6 miles. The walk itself is very easy: flat, paved or grassed surface with no stiles. However, there is little shade on the walk/punt and participants are strongly advised to apply sun cream (even in overcast conditions), wear a sun hat and suitable clothing, and carry water to avoid dehydration. The punt should take approx. 1.5 hours and is self-hire, so I will look for volunteers who are prepared to have a go at punting -- it is great fun! [You can take turns along the way.]

If it rains I may change the plan and do the walk only, foregoing the punt, and we might stop in a pub (i.e. indoors) rather than in the Tea Garden. Walking only will extend the total length of the walk to approx. 7 miles from/to the station.

Costs for the punt will depend on occupancy (a boat takes up to six people) -- I estimate that it will be between £ 10 and £ 20 per head. Please pay me in cash on the day.

To allow me to pre-book boats please book in with me by July 28.  [Acceptance of later bookings depends on boat occupancy.]
