A social visit to some of the better pubs in lower Horsforth.
Itinerary (timings approximate):
17.00 – Granvilles Beer & Gin House (24 Long Row, LS18 5AA), a relaxed bar with 15 ales on tap. If you do not see us at the bar or close to it, there is a covered outside area to the rear of the bar.
18.00 - The Tavern (Town Street, LS18 4RJ), many a TaH walk around Horsforth has ended here. This is 6 minutes’ walk downhill from Granvilles.
18.45 – The Old Kings Arms (1 The Green, Horsforth LS18 4RH); there may be live music on a Saturday which may or may not be a good thing of course. This is about a minute’s walk from the Tavern.
We then amble down the hill for approx. 6-7 minutes via Back Lane, crossing the A6120 Ring Road via the pedestrian crossing and onto New Road Side for the remaining pubs – all three of which are within about a minutes’ walk of each other.
19.45 – The Three Swords (106 New Road Side, Horsforth LS18 4QB). A longer stay here and a chance to eat the quality Indian Food that is very popular.
21.15 – Horsforth Brewery and Tap Room (143 New Road Side, Horsforth LS18 4JZ; basement bar with stepped access off the street).
22.00 – The Hop Shack (135 New Road Side, Horsforth LS18 4DQ), a ‘Craft beer and bottle shop’ with a choice of 6 keg lines on tap and over 100 bottled / canned beers.
All timings are of course approximate to allow everyone to finish their drinks or food! In particular the Three Swords might be busy, and we may need to swap over with one of the last two adjacent venues until we can get a table there for food (last food order at the Three Swords is at 21.15).
Food is also available in various takeaways and restaurants near all venues.
Getting to and from Horsforth:
Granvilles is 2 minutes’ walk from Horsforth school bus stop for the 50/50A service that also goes down to The Green near The Tavern and the Old Kings Arms.
Numerous bus services along the A65 New Road Side that stop very close to the last 3 pubs; if arriving early evening by this route you can reach Granvilles / The Tavern etc. by walking up the hill via Back Lane, crossing the A6120 Ring Road via the pedestrian crossing and onto The Green / Town Street – this is an approx. 7-8 minutes’ walk to the Tavern and another 7-8 minutes’ walk uphill to Granvilles.
There is a Train Station at the top end of Horsforth, about 20 minutes’ walk from The Tavern and nearly 30 minutes’ from The Three Swords (but uphill on the way back!).
