Group name: Lothian & Borders
This group is a part of Lothian & Borders Area.
Our activities include:
Short and easy walks, Family-friendly walks, Path maintenance
We are an active group in Edinburgh with a walking programme which includes walks at all grades every month.
Our walking programme includes walks at all grades every month. In addition, each month (except December) we hire a coach to take us to locations within 2 hours drive of Edinburgh. We also organise weekends away, talks and a monthly social event for those who no longer feel able to tackle the walking programme.
Please take a look at our walks programme below and, if any of our walks interests you, get in touch with the walk leader.
GOING ON A COACH WALK
Descriptions of each walk available are circulated via the group email system and also on the coach. To book a place, phone no more than 3 weeks in advance. If you leave a message on an answer phone you may assume you have a place unless you hear to the contrary, please remember to leave a contact phone number. Coaches depart from Waterloo Place at 09:00 and return around 19:00. You may cancel a booking up to the Wednesday before departure at no cost. If you cancel on or after the Thursday or do not turn up for the coach we require that you pay full fare. Cheques for cancellations should be made payable to R.A. Edinburgh Group and sent to the Treasurer. Please contact us for his address.
GOING ON OTHER WALKS (using car share or public transport)
Unless otherwise stated it is essential to contact the leader of a walk during the preceding fortnight if you wish to participate in that walk. The leader will then know who is joining the walk and be able to confirm meeting place, car numbers, bus times, walk route etc. Edinburgh Ramblers rules require a minimum of 3 people on a walk (including the leader) and leaders will cancel walks if numbers are too low. In addition, weather conditions, lack of car space, changes in bus/train times or sudden illness or crisis affecting the leader can all intervene and cause a walk to be cancelled or altered. Leaders will always notify members if plans change.
Please contact the branch by clicking on "Ask a question via email about this walk" and we will reply with contact information for the walk leader and further instructions.
Where car sharing is involved we operate a voluntary contribution towards costs based on 30p per mile shared per car. The total contribution for all cars required for a walk is shared equally between the total number of walkers. The walk leader will collect the contributions and divide the money evenly between all the car drivers irrespective of the number of passengers in each car. For weekends away costs (including those for extra journeys whilst away) should be shared equally between the driver and passengers. The CSPC (cost shared per car) given for walks is an estimate based on mileage from central Edinburgh and may not necessarily reflect the actual mileage (for example if there are detours to pick up walkers). In such circumstances the walk leader may choose to proceed on the actual mileage recorded on the day.
Dogs on leads may be allowed on some walks at the discretion of walk leaders. Where a walk leader is agreeable to dogs being allowed on any particular walk, the walk details will say "Dogs welcome". Dogs are not otherwise allowed on our walks and cannot come on the coaches. Assistance dogs are always welcome.
Edinburgh Family Walks:
This initiative began in Autumn 2015. Before the pandemic our group went out every second weekend of term time, generally on a Sunday afternoon
. We'd get anything from 7- 20 plus along.
Our walks could best be described as ‘half pint’ B level walks as they generally take 2 to 3 hours covering 5-7 km; involving up hill and down dale and sometimes up trees! All our walks previously were in or within easy reach of Edinburgh and were planned round bus routes for non-car users. Although going forward we may also add some walks which will need a car as this takes us to quieter routes.
And once we start up again we will post our walks here so it is the best way to be kept informed. We do hope also to post our walks here on this Ramblers website.
Currently our previous walk leading team, for various reasons are not in the same position to offer to put on walks and so we'd welcome new helpers. Please do get in touch to discuss ways to get involved to help revitalise this popular family walk group. You can email firstname.lastname@example.org
subject line 'family walks' and it will get to us!
Fingers crossed we can soon offer some great walks going forward from lockdown and when the weather is nice we like to add built-in time to kick a ball, paddle in rivers & sea and let toddlers out of slings for a walk about. Fresh air and beautiful surroundings just the tonic required!
