Overview

Rhos Dirion Ramble – 2nd August

Join us for a 'Fine Moor' 9.5-mile ramble in the beautiful Bannau Brycheiniog / Brecon Beacons National Park!

🗓 Date: Saturday 2nd August

⏰ Meet: 9:45 am for a 10:00 am start

📍 Start point: Car park marked Blaen-y-cwm on OS maps and Mynydd Du on Google Maps: Google Maps link
What3words: ///punctured.puffed.twigs

⚠️ Important: The minor single-lane road leading to this car park is slow — please allow extra time.
Expected finish time: around 3:00 pm.

Route details:
We’ll start in a quiet remote valley, passing the Grwyne Fawr reservoir and bothy. The route includes a steady 300 m ascent over 7 km along a mountain path, leading us to the pass between Waun Fach and Rhos Dirion. From here, we’ll enjoy sweeping views across central Wales before a short climb to the Rhos Dirion trig point.

After soaking in the views, we’ll follow the long ridgeline to the south-east, which (weather permitting!) offers excellent views for the rest of the walk. We’ll descend via a sharp 1:3 gradient on an uneven path (approx. 1 km) back to the car park.

What to bring:

  • Plenty of water
  • Suncream and a hat if it’s hot
  • A warm layer (we’ll be at mountain altitudes regardless of the temperature at home)
  • Lunch and snacks

🚗 The car park is adequate but not large — please car share if possible.

Difficulty: Moderate to challenging (due to the length, ascent, and final steep descent).
