This is a level 9 mile walk exploring the natural beauty of the Almondell Country Park and the industrial history of the West Lothian Shale Trail and the Union Canal, crossing a dramatic viaduct and aqueduct spanning the River Almond valley.
The walk starts from the Almondell Country Park South car park following the tree and bush lined East Calder/Uphall Station path (part of the Shale Trail), turns east along a path and minor road past Roman Camp Cottages, Lookaboutye and Muirend and on to a short stretch of the Union Canal over a towering aqueduct. It then leaves the canal to follow a path along the river valley leading back to the Country Park Visitor Centre, Nasmythe Bridge and back to the car park.
This is an easy flat walk along good paths and tracks, with one short section on a minor road. The paths can get muddy after prolonged periods of rain. There are five stiles and a few gates.
Because of the distance, this is probably C+ walk on the Biggar grading scale.
