The section of coastline between Aberlady and Gullane is probably one of the finest on the whole of the east coast of the UK. The extensive sandy beach Gullane Sands fringed by wind blown dunes stretches from the Aberlady nature reserve all the way to Gullane Point. Good paths along the fringes of multiple golf courses, including part of the John Muir Way make this one of East Lothian’s best walks.
I think this walk has just about everything. The views are fantastic in every direction. Over to Fife, up to Arthur’s Seat and the Pentland Hills, down to North Berwick Law and across the three Gullane golf courses. There are also opportunities to spot many different species of bird life, so bring some binoculars if you have them. The village of Gullane has a number of quaint independent shops along with good pub/restaurants, a charming tea room and a take away coffee shop. In the grounds of Luffness House it is possible to see a 16th century beehive dovecot and the remains of a 13th century friary.
The route is mostly flat but I would advise the use of walking boots as with trainers you will have no chance of keeping the sand out of your shoes! There are two short gradients up and over sand dunes. There are no stiles.
Two stops are planned. An alfresco coffee stop about an hour into the walk and then another stop in Gullane where you can either eat a packed lunch or make use of the café’s and pubs in the village.
