Starting from the Market Cross, a small fore-courted area which has a stone cross memorial on the intersection of Compston Road and Rydal Road at the North End of Ambleside Central town (Greggs & Rohan Outdoor clothing shops are here). We follow the right hand pavement northbound along the A591 Ambleside to Grasmere road. After a short distance we take the pathway into Rydal Park and on to Rydal Hall after which we start our ascent Northwards along Nab Scar to Lord Crag & Lord Cove before arriving at Heron Pike 612m / 2040ft. From the summit we walk the ridge past Blind Cove and Erne Crag until we reach Stone Cove and Great Rigg where we change direction to South West and make our descent to Grasmere, passing Riggs Crags, Brackenwife Knotts and Stone Arthur on our way.
