Overview

This walk includes both the summit of The Ercall and The Wrekin. Two iconic places of myth and legend, these hills are a SSSI, local nature reserve and part of a National Landscape. The toposcope from the iron age, hill fort summit of The Wrekin looks out across 17 English and Welsh counties.  Much of this walk is on paths which most visitors to these woods rarely use. There are peaceful, undulating, woodland ways which take you up to the top of The Ercall and to Halfway House on The Wrekin on which you see few walkers in contrast to the steady stream of people on the main track. There are stunning viewpoints on the way to both summits.  We descend via Heavens Gate and Hells Gate and then walk through the forest. Everyone who lives in or visits Shropshire should walk up The Wrekin and Ercall at least once.

There are a variety of paths, some are rough in places with loose stones and exposed tree roots, others are broad tracks. Walking poles are a good idea, especially on steeper descents. The path from the Ercall car park is steep to begin with, as is the alternative woodland Right of Way Path to Halfway House. People can walk these at their own pace. However, many sections of this walk are gently undulating with more gradual climbs and descents where one can get one's beath back and enjoy the views through the trees across the Shropshire Plain to the hills beyond, other sections are almost flat. Bring a drink, snack and packed lunch.
