Situated somewhat apart from the other major peaks of Snowdonia, the 854 metre Arenig Fawr dominates the surrounding moorland. The paths, though steep in places, make for a relatively easy ascent, aided by the fact that the starting point is already at 1100 feet! Our route sets out on a quiet lane which it soon leaves to follow a stony track up to Llyn Arenig Fawr, lying beneath the impressive crags of the mountain. A path continues steeply up beside the crags, soon leaving the lake far below. Then a steady climb across grass and boulders leads to the ridge and thence to the summit cairn and trig point, with extensive views in all directions. There is also a memorial here to the crewmen of a US B17 bomber which crashed on the summit in 1943. We descend quite steeply to pick up an easy track before re-joining the lane for a short walk back to the start.
