This is a circular walk starting from Barbury Castle Car Park. Initially, we will head south along a broad track. We cross some gallops - please look both ways before proceeding - before crossing a road near Rockley. We head west towards the tiny hamlet of Rockley and then climb to the Downs (if that makes sense?): Manton Down, Clatford Down and Fyfield Down. Once again, we cross gallops. Give any horses a wide berth or risk being shouted at, as I was when I recce'd the walk! We then make our way past a field of (according to Wikipedia) "the best assemblage of Sarsen Stones in England". Take note of the information on the Fyfield Down notice board, as we join the Herepath or Green Street. We then intercept the Ridgeway and follow that northwards for almost five miles. Eventually the path climbs up to Barbury Castle, an Iron Age hill fort, dating from just before the arrival of the Romans. It's then a very short walk back to the starting point.
If the weather is kind we should have good views for much of the walk.
When recce'd the paths were mostly good underfoot, with only a few places where it was muddy.
There is one stile.
Please bring sufficient food and drink for the walk. A morning and lunchtime break are scheduled with little protection from the elements.
The walk is limited to 20 participants, please book online by 6pm Wednesday 1st April, using the link provided.
