A walk that is inspired by King Harold’s march to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Harold was crowned King of England on 6th January 1066. This set in motion a chain of events from the Battle of Stamford Bridge and ended in defeat at the Battle of Hastings.
We start at Staplehurst. The first part is mostly through meadow which makes for a very pleasant walk although the paths can be muddy. We turn into the valley at Hartridge. There is a steady climb up to Hocker Edge and only a little road walking along the country lanes where traffic is minimal.
Hopefully if the walk finishes early there may be an opportunity to spend time visiting Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens (free for National Trust members- otherwise admission charges apply).
