This is a circular walk through the Bavelaw Estate and edge of the Pentalnd Hills Regional Park. Our walk starts from the junction of Cockburn Crescent and Cockburnhill Road, Balerno.
From the start point, there is a short section of road walking, past Buteland House, to enter Bavelaw Estate, passing Listonshiels. We walk across Bavelaw Estate (part of Pentland Hills Regional Park) which brings us out on the Red Road, where we descend to pass the Bavelaw Marsh and Red Moss. We then follow the Rigg Road back to start point in Balerno, through the woodland shelter belt along the Nail Trail.
There will be a fair bit of road walking along quiet country lanes at the start and after leaving Bavelaw Estate. We follow mostly good paths across the estate but it may be stony underfoot in places. If there has been a lot of rain, there will be patches which are wet and/or muddy. Some ascent, but well spread out across the walk so barely noticeable. There is one place where if
gate is locked it may be necessary to climb over a fence. In the Nail Trail woodland there are a couple of small fallen trees which may have to be climbed over (nothing too demanding).
If you would like to join us, please contact the Walk Leader to book a place in advance, noting that for some walks places may be limited. Please advise the walk leader of any issue that may
affect your ability to complete the walk. Also, if you have one, please remember to bring your ICE (In Case of Emergency) card with you; or, if you don’t have one, a note of your proposed
emergency contact name and number will be required in case of emergency.
As conditions underfoot can vary, stout walking shoes/ boots, gaiters and walking poles, if you use them, are recommended.
Please note that, unfortunately, dogs cannot be accommodated on our walks.
