Description:

From carpark at coast, very close to the castle, we go up a grassy slope to chapel ruins and across to the path via the bridge over the Back Burn into Wester Shore Wood and the Hopetoun Estate.  Following the woodland path we walk eastwards with views of Fife and beyond.  After approx 2 miles we take the zig zag path up to the Abercorn Churchyard.  There is a very old church, a tiny museum and many interesting headstones. Spot the skulls and crossbones!  Leaving the churchyard we pass through Abercorn Village and then walk a short distance on a narrow road which has a regular flow of vehicles.  Turning left through large gates we are then into the Hopetoun Estate.  Walking eastwards towards the house itself we then turn left heading towards the coastal path where we rejoin our outward path again.  Returning to Blackness Castle - the boat that never sailed! - a visitors' centre has info and toilets.

Directions:

Leave library car park and turn left into Riccarton Mains Road.  Follow that road until you reach the traffic lights at the junction next to the Park and Ride.  Take the third exit at the roundabout onto the A71 to Edinburgh and then take first exit at next roundabout to M8/M9 .  Follow signs to Stirling, initially on the M8 and then onto M9 signposted Stirling.  Leave the M9 at Junction 3 to Bo'ness  At the T junction only 100 yards from your exit turn right onto A803 signposted Blackness Castle.  Then take second turning on right also signposted Blackness Castle and drive the 2 miles on that road leading into Blackness Village.  Parking at sea front in designated places and others on your left in front of toilets and hotel.

Because of recent tree felling work boots and poles are recommended as there may be branch/twig debris on the path through the woods.
