Overview

This walk round part of the Ettrick Horseshoe starts from the end of the public road above Potburn farmhouse, at NT 188093. There is a wide turning space and parking is possible on its edges.
The walk rises from there through a steep forest track which brings us out onto Bucht Hill, and quickly onto Bodesbeck Law, a 665 metre-high Donald . We walk along faint paths to the 678 metre-high Capel Fell, before dropping to the Southern Upland Way at Ettrick Head, and following tracks via Potburn to the starting point. For the really fit and adventurous, there may be the opportunity to continue the walk over Wind Fell (665m) and Ettrick Pen (692m) before dropping down to the Southern Upland Way at Over Phawhope Bothy.

The hills are not difficult in themselves, but this is a serious traverse overall. Full hill-walking gear is essential, as is a high level of fitness. The walk offers superb views on a clear day, and will not proceed unless there is a strong chance of good weather.

Walk starts at the end of the public road to Potburn farmhouse. Car-sharing is strongly recommended. About an hour should be allowed to travel from Selkirk down the Ettrickbridge Road; The distance is only 24 miles, but the road is winding and the further part, a minor road from Ettrick (where the B road turns left towards Langholm) is narrow with passing places. The walk leader will arrange car sharing and timing when people register. The walk starts at 10, or whenever everyone registered has arrived.
