Overview

This is a varied circular walk starting from Stobs Camp with some fascinating wartime history.  The walk can be challenging in stages.

This first part is on farm track passing several settlements and hill forts on the way until Penchrise Pen is reached.  The descent from Penchrise Pen into the valley on the other side is fairly steep.

The second part of the walk is up to an old (now disused) military target range where the ground is uneven and boggy with the possibility of cows grazing in the vicinity.

The last part of the walk brings you along the closed railway route, north of Shankend Viaduct to return to the start.  One part of the line carrying it over a short bridge is eroded but passible with care.

Conditions in places are very boggy so boots, poles and waterproofs are recommended.  Two stops for coffee and lunch.  There is the possibility of one or two wooden fences to climb over.

There is limited space for parking so car sharing would be advised if possible; I would advise meeting in the large car park in Hawick in Victoria Road at 9.30 for car share.
