Overview

This is a great walk, climbing up and around Castle Hill, climbing The Smatcher then descending to take in Water Break its Neck waterfall before returning to our cars. There is a lovely bridleway that skirts below Castle Hill and The Smatcher with excellent views of the Black Mountains to the South on a good day.

Start time:
10:00 am
Estimated finish time:
2:30 pm
Difficulty:
Moderate
Distance:
12.1km / 7.5mi
Ascent:
445m / 1460ft
Type:
circular

Two climbs, at least one gate to climb, two stiles, one fence to climb (no barbed wire), and a tricky descent from The Smatcher which is a bit rocky and slippy to start with. We’ll be crossing the A44 twice, so care needed as it’s a busy road. We return via the track that passes Water Break its Neck, so a slight diversion can be made if wished to visit the waterfall.
