Walking in East Radnor

We are a very friendly Group, covering the Knighton and Presteigne area of Powys (though parts of both towns are in England!), with members in Herefordshire and Shropshire also. We have the Offa's Dyke Centre in Knighton (the route passes through the town). Knighton is also the start of Glyndwr's Way and the new Heart of Wales Line Trail passes through our area.

Mid Wales is often overlooked but has amazing walking areas in the hills, where you may walk all day and not meet anyone. The hills are up to about 600m with much country about 400m. The rivers define the geography, with the Teme and the tributaries of the Wye. We are near the more popular hills of south Shropshire (the Clees; Long Mynd etc) and Herefordshire (Hay Bluff and Black Mountains etc).

We also have a team of volunteers, working for the County Rights of Way department, helping to keep paths open by installing gates, bridges, etc. and doing clearance work, surveys and anything else needed.

Our walks

We walk every Wednesday and some Saturdays, generally with Moderate walks 6-9 miles, and short walks on some Tuesdays and Thursdays. Visitors always made welcome!

The other Saturdays there are walks led by our neighbours, the Four Wells group

Please note that unfortunately, we are not able to allow dogs on our walks, unless the description specifically says they are allowed.

We are amazingly well supported by our members leading all our walks. New members will get plenty of help from our experienced leaders to start leading, so please get in touch and we hope to walk with you soon.

Guides

The Group provides several local walk guides, available from our group contact as documents or downloadable files:

  • Knighton circular walks (and Kinsley wood routes) are available via the Group contact.

  • Walks you will enjoy - these 18 walks have been available from various local centres and by mail for many years, now in its 3rd edition.

If you would like a full set, pocket sized (approx 200x90mm), on waterproof paper, in a plastic wallet, then use the contact on Group page. Note that some walks have changed since printing and updated files are available on request to the contact. Also GPX files are available via the Group contact.

Picnic

Group picnic

The group met at a member’s home in Shelderton on a warm, if not hot day. We walked up and down the River Clun until lunchtime when we stopped for a shared picnic. We lounged around the garden, eating and drinking our homemade treats, and just enjoyed being together.

Recent walks

Looking over the ant hills

Rhydspence 15th November

We gradually ascended from the Rhydspence Inn, crossing fields to a very muddy lane which we followed for some distance. We then crossed open, bracken covered land on Milton Hill before descending to Michaelchurch. A quiet lane led us on our slow ascent across a field. We soon arrived at the atmospheric, ancient ant hills overlooking the Wye Valley, lit dramatically by afternoon sun

From the trig point

Llandrindod 8th November

Despite a rainy morning, we had not a drop of rain on our walk. Starting from the Lake we walked up through the autumnal woodland until we emerged at the old church. We walked along tracks, up and over and around, sometimes up, sometimes down. We lunched by a small reservoir lake before returning, again up and down to the trig point above town and finally down.

Black brook

Water-break-its-neck

We walked up a woodland trail and crossed Black Brook. From there we continued in a deep valley criss-crossing the tiny Black Brook until we finally reached its source. Open moorland led us to thea track along the top of the hill with fine views of Llandegley Rocks. We turned back and downward to just above Water Break Its Neck and a return to the valley.

Woodland walking

Walk High Vinnals 26 July

We walked over, under, around, and through the paths from High Vinnalls, arriving at Richard’s Castle Church and Castle for lunch. We walked undulations through woodland all day on a delightful walk which took in the Herefordshire Trail, Mortimer Forest Trail, Vinnalls Loop, and Climbing Jack Trail. We skirted the edge of the newly marked, Goggins Nature Reserve.

Hay bluff

The cat's back

We parked at the Stone Circle to make our way gently up Hay Bluff and along the ridge to Cat’s Back with glorious views down the valleys on either side. Despite an attack of flying ants we had a marvellous walk along the rocky Cat’s Back and down. We circled around the hill on a lovely, if slightly muddy, tree-lined track to return.

Up The Whimble

The Whimble 5th October

The group walked up Mutton Dingle from New Radnor and then ascended The Whimble, a hill visible from miles around. From there we walked up Davy Morgan’s Dingle to amble up into the Radnor Forest.
