Our route takes us over rolling downland to two Bronze Age hillforts. Cissbury Ring is one of the largest in Europe and we circumnavigate the ramparts. It is home to a herd of New Forest ponies whose grazing has restored the chalk grassland habitat. Occult legend has it that beech-encircled Chanctonbury Ring was created by the Devil, who can be summoned by running anti-clockwise seven times around the trees - something to try while we have our picnic there. Our paths offer exhilarating ridgetop views of the South Downs, Sussex Weald and Channel coastline. Skylarks, like us, will be ascending, chiffchaffs chirping, there may be the occasional cuckoo; red campion, Michaelmas daisies and cow parsley are out in abundance - and, if anyone spots an orchid, the leader will buy them a drink.
Please bring a packed lunch and plenty of water.
The route is exposed; if rain is forecast, please dress accordingly.
