Overview

We will stroll across and around the common before heading through Bois woods towards Chesham. Our route is enclosed initially but opens out to the woods a little way after the houses. We reach a gate where is it said that Thomas Harding, was arrested and later burnt at the stake with others. The martyrs stone in Amersham is a memorial to those who were executed, all for wanting to read the bible in English and not Latin.

We pass across a field with views of Chesham town ahead of us. Under the railway we gain the edges of the Chess river and walk along its banks to admire the clear waters. We will stop here for a short break. Eventually we turn away from the river and start a gradual ascent out of the valley and back through the woods to our start.

No stiles.

The ground may be slippy due to mud, leaves, flints and roots so care is required and poles may be useful. There is one short steep down path and similar up for a few yards only.

Dogs under close supervision are welcome.

Bring some lunch or a snack.
