Overview

Along the Harthope valley in the Cheviots to Langlee, then gradual climb to Langlee Crags before descending to Old Middleton via Brands Hill and on to North Middleton, then north along minor road to ford on Coldgate Water and returning westwards through Happy Valley to the start.

Some walking along minor roads, but mainly moorland and field tracks, with some rough sections and a long steepish climb from the Harthope valley to Langlee Crags. Grade: Moderate.

Coffee stop en-route at Langlee Crags (with magnificent views towards Cheviot and Hedgehope) and then a picnic lunch stop within the ruins of Old Middleton Village. Afterwards, for those interested, there may be the opportunity to visit the Ad Gefrin Distillery and Museum in Wooler or sample the delights of the cafe there.

Directions to start point: A1 northwards past Morpeth, then A697 via Longhorsley, Longframlington and Powburn to Wooler. Turn off main road into Wooler and turn first left onto Cheviot Street at the south end of the High Street. This road carries on uphill out of Wooler and where the road forks, turn right (SP Middleton Hall). At Earle bear left past Middleton Hall and then turn right (SP Langleeford). Follow this narrow road (watch out for potholes!) past farm, delightfully named “Skirl Naked”, then down a steep hill. At the bottom, the road flattens out and you can park on the broad grass verges on the right.
