As it is December again, we return to Glasgow Central Station for our festive tour of Glasgow and a few concise remarks rooted in the city's heritage and history.
Our route takes us out from Central Station to explore a few of the significant buildings (the Cadoro and the Crystal Palace) that contribute to the rich architectural legacy of the Victorian buildings. We will pass down towards the Clyde and the Calton Area, entering Glasgow Green to explore significant structures and buildings in the area. Refreshments and toilets are located at the West Brewery, an extension of Templeton's Building modelled on the Doge's Palace in Venice. We will also pay attention to the memorial to those young women who died in an accidental collapse of an internal wall
Heading northwards we pass through an area rich in history and will reach Glasgow Cathedral and make our way to Duke Street which has a dark history of executions and maltreatment of Suffragettes. From there we will return down through part of the Merchant City to the city centre. In previous years, the walk terminated around the City Chambers and George Square where the buildings, installations and statues have long been a focus for our attention, however due to reconstruction work which is ongoing we may be limited in the parts of the area we can visit.
The walk itself will be about five miles but with frequent stops we should complete our journey around 2.30-ish, but if heavy rain features the walk will be adjusted (shortened) to avoid getting soaked. At the conclusion of the walk, the group members will be free to return home on an early train or to linger for an hour in the Counting House at George Square, or Horseshoe Bar in Drury Street near Central Station.
