Overview

The third section of our summer long distance walk, the Cleveland Way. The walk starts at Ravenscar from the visitors centre where we are met with sweeping views of the coast with Robin Hoods Bay in the distance. Early into the walk we pass by well preserved evidence of the historic industry of alum production at the Peak Alum Works before reaching the coastal path. We will have views of the sea all morning, walk by the beach at Boggle Hole and will stop at the quaint village of Robin Hoods Bay for lunch.

After lunch we will continue along the coast, experiencing fantastic views all afternoon, hopefully spotting some seals and boat wrecks in the water. The walk finishes once we reach the famous Whitby Abbey and descend the 199 steps into the town, where we will have refreshments in a local café and arrange lifts back to cars at Ravenscar.

This is a fantastic stretch of coast with some beautiful views and features but it is not flat! There's lots of up and down throughout the entire walk – about 500m of ascent and 655m descent in total.

Transport and travel

➡️ Please note this is a linear walk

🅿️ We will meet in Whitby at the far end of the Marina Front Car Park at 10:00, and then travel in some of the cars to the start of the walk at Ravenscar. Do not pay for parking until everyone has arrived and we have worked out who is driving to Ravenscar at the start of the walk. If you are driving, please be prepared to give people a lift to either the start of the walk or to allow them to collect their cars at the end of the walk. Parking in Whitby is around £11 all day.

🚌 If you are coming by public transport, you can get the 9X bus from Scarborough station at 09:20 to Ravenscar and wait at the visitor centre for us to arrive from Whitby. There are regular buses back from Whitby to Scarborough on the X93/X94 through the afternoon.

Other information

🥪 You will need to bring a packed lunch

🐶 Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times. If you are bringing a dog, you must arrange beforehand for someone to give you and your dog a lift from Whitby to Ravenscar (we suggest doing this at the start of the walk before your dog has got muddy, rather than at the end!)

🚻 There are toilets at the start of the walk in Ravenscar (free) and at lunch in Robin Hoods Bay (40p - card payment)

🫖 After the walk we will head to a café in Whitby for tea and cake

Midlife Hikers is a Ramblers group for people in their 40s and 50s, and our walks are led by volunteers. Non-members are welcome to try us out for free for up to 3 walks but then we ask you to join the Ramblers
