A walk out onto the River Clyde at low tide to explore the Lang Dyke and visit some of the accessible towers/beacons.
The Lang Dyke is part of James Golbournes' civil engineering project to deepen the River Clyde and allow sea-going ships to dock in Glasgow. It was completed in 1773.
Low tide is 13.20, and high tide 19.30. We will be walking out on the falling tide and turning back well before the tide turns.
Local Grade: B
Terrain: A 2km walk through woodland before following a causeway onto the low tide mud, and out to the towers. Once we leave the path at the side of the river it is sticky mud all the way - nowhere to sit.
Hiking boots could be worn, but wellington boots are HIGHLY recommended as it means you can walk in straight lines.
Max height: 41m
Maps covering route of walk: OS Landranger No. 64.
