Overview

Dykes are ancient Saxon fortifications built to protect the city from chariot attack.  Their footprint is still evident in tree lined, straight paths, sheltered on a hot day.

A circular walk, we initially head south from the station past the zoo to Birch. Crossing the Colne and Roman Rivers along the ancient Saxon fortifications that used to protect the town.  We head back via Colchester town centre and maybe a pub stop at the end.

We will have a lunch stop so bring some snacks or a packed lunch.

We will meet at the main entrance to Colchester Main Station.  There is plenty of parking at the station.
