Overview

Dam Head car park

A Ramble around the lower part of the Derwent Valley on good paths with little mud. However, there will be some climbing involved early in the walk. Views over the Derwent valley, railway viaduct and Gibside column.

Moderate circular walk of 5.6 miles

We will start from the Dam car park (see details) and follow the valley down to Swalwell where we will climb Swalwell bank for 200 meters and then take a bridal way om the right to follow the valley, climbing gradually over the next 1 mile. Thereafter the walk is downhill or flattish through some woods back onto the Derwent railway line for ½ a mile. The remain of the walk is in the Derwent country park back to the car park.

No domestic animals expected on the way and only one stile to climb possibly.

After the walk, refreshment possible at the Pedalling Squares café Swalwell (see directions for parking underneath)
