Dam Head car park
A Ramble around the lower part of the Derwent Valley on good paths with little mud. However, there will be some climbing involved early in the walk. Views over the Derwent valley, railway viaduct and Gibside column.
Moderate circular walk of 5.6 miles
We will start from the Dam car park (see details) and follow the valley down to Swalwell where we will climb Swalwell bank for 200 meters and then take a bridal way om the right to follow the valley, climbing gradually over the next 1 mile. Thereafter the walk is downhill or flattish through some woods back onto the Derwent railway line for ½ a mile. The remain of the walk is in the Derwent country park back to the car park.
No domestic animals expected on the way and only one stile to climb possibly.
After the walk, refreshment possible at the Pedalling Squares café Swalwell (see directions for parking underneath)
Directions from Chester Le Street.
For walk: take the A1(M1) northern direction passed teams valley, Dunston and Whickham. Exit the A1 at junction 73 towards Swalwell on the A 694. Continue on the A 694 across the Swalwell roundabout towards Winlaton Mill/ Rowlands Gill. The car park is localised on the right about 700 meters from the roundabout. After turning left off the A 694, immediately turn right into the car park without crossing the river.
For tea room: Drive out of car park and turn Right onto the A 694 to the roundabout. Turn Right at the roundabout towards Swalwell on the B 6317, straight through traffic lights and then once passed a few shops on the right , at the level of petrol station turn Right into Swalwell bank car park , Quality Row Road, Swalwell, NE16 3AG (free parking) https://w3w.co/agents.daily.lobby
