This is in reality two walks in one! There will be a 4.5 mile walk in the morning, then after a leisurely lunch, a shorter 3 mile walk.
The morning walk goes across open parkland and then heads down to the banks of the river Nith, which it follows for about 2 miles before heading back towards the castle and back down to the car park. The afternoon walk follows the Marr Burn, mainly through open woodland. There are wonderful views of the castle and the landscaped garden before passing a small hydro power station. There are several stone bridges and the trees are truly impressive.
Both walks start from the carpark at the Larchwood Cabin where there are toilets and a cafe, and this is where lunch will be taken, so you can either bring your own lunch or buy something from the cafe (alternatively, the group may decide to have tea and cake after the afternoon walk!)
Both walks are along good paths with a couple of short parts on minor roads
