Walk Destination: Dumbarton
Walk Detail : River Leven Walk, 6 miles, Grade C, Easy
Start: 9.00am Morrisons, Stevenston
10.00am Levengrove Park, Dumbarton
Finish: 1.00pm
Drivers: Cross Erskine Bridge and turn left on to A82, then take A814 Helensburgh direction. Keep on A814 bypassing Dumbarton Town Centre and you will see ahead of you three orange and white high flats. Cross the River Leven, and turn left at traffic lights onto West Bridgend. Follow the road with high flats on your left and just before the brdge, turn right onto Woodyard Road and access car park on your left.
Walk: The River Leven is only 7 miles long from Loch Lomond to the River Clyde, but there’s a lot of history here. Denny’s shipyard, birthplace of the Cutty Sark, Dumbarton Rock, 18th Century manufacture of Turkey Red Dye, and the site of the castle where Robert the Bruce died.
First section up to Renton is wee bit muddy with a few downed trees to negotiate, coffee stop before crossing footbridge and return is on NCR, much better path.
We should be back at beautifully kept Levengrove Park by 1.00 pm. Lunch at cafe or picnic tables.
