Overview

We begin the walk along a track to the delightfully named farm The Bog. From here we follow a lovely bridleway as it contours above the river to Parson Shields and Williamston. We continue south via Barhaugh Park to cross the South Tyne at Kirkhaugh. We follow a short section of the Pennine Way north and then pass through Thornhopeburn, Intake, Longdyke Head, and Greenhaugh, before rejoinging the Pennine Way to Burnstones. We return via Knarsdale Hall to cross the old bridge at Eals.

Please meet at Eals Bridge. Directions: from Hexham: follow the A69 west onto the Haltwhistle bypass. Turn left at the sign for Coanwood (Alston and Halton Lea Gate). Continue on this road for 3 miles; then, where the Alston road bends sharp right to Coanwood, turn off left (straight ahead) onto a minor road. Stay straight ahead on this road for 3 miles as it narrows and eventually descends to Eals Bridge. There is some limited off-road parking before the bridge - car sharing is encouraged due to limited parking space. We try to offer an informal share from Hexham - please contact the walk leader if you are interested (driver or passenger).
