Starting from Ball Pit Lane, we head south to reach the Millennium Park before joining the Ilsley Down Riding Route, which takes us to Dennisford Road, a firm farm track. We then gradually climb to the highest point on East Ilsley Down before descending equally gradually to the outskirts of the pretty village of Compton. Heading east from Compton, the route takes us to Crows Foot, providing some excellent views across the village and Church Farm along the way, before turning northwards through a pleasantly wooded track to reach the Ridgeway. The route then heads north and north-west largely following a dismantled railway line, which runs beside Blewbury Down. Crossing the dismantled railway line, we gently climb past Fox Barrow passing Several Down and Compton Downs before returning to our cars via the Gallops.
This route has been designed to minimise the amount of walking on chalk and mud, both of which can be very slippery when wet. Nevertheless, given the amount of rain so far this year, there will still be sections which will be wet, muddy, and slippery. It is, therefore, recommended that walking boots are worn.
This walk is restricted to 18 walkers and hence you are requested to book online using the link below before 6.00pm on Saturday, 28th February.
The majority of the route is exposed and hence it is recommended that you dress appropriately having checked the weather forecast on the day.
Please bring sufficient food and drink for the day.
