Please note changed time from previously publicised – avoiding an early start on a Sunday morning!
Walked at a leisurely pace, this lovely riverside ramble in East Lothian, following the path of the river Tyne up river, links the attractive settlements of East Linton and Haddington. The scenery is pleasant rural arable farmland, but there are a number of historic interests visited by the path. Hailes Castle is a real surprise: a substantial, tumbledown residence towering over the opposite bank, which we visit by a short detour. There are a succession of old mills, some slowly falling apart and others converted into houses. At Haddington a 12th century ruined church is shortly followed by a thriving 14th century church. A short section of road at the start and end, a wide path surfaced with a fine gravel and shared with cyclists for half a mile, undulating narrow riverside paths uneven underfoot, along field edges and through small woodland, for most of the walk, detour to Hailes Castle on a minor road.
Negligible ascent, 21 steps up and similarly down near the beginning. When wet the path can be muddy, most likely to be high wild plant growth either side of the path on some sections. Possibility of coffee and cake in Haddington at the end of the walk.
