A circular walk over Broad Law, the highest hill (840m, a ‘Donald’) in the Scottish Borders. The summit of Broad Law is some 500m in elevation above the start point. Great views all round on a clear day.
This walk (about 12 miles, ~800m total ascent, ~7 hours) involves a long and reasonably strenuous day in the hills, and will only be undertaken in favourable weather conditions. If the Broad Law walk does not go ahead, the nearby Riskinhope & Loch of the Lowes walk (~5 miles circular from the Glen Café car park) will be substituted.
The walk starts from the car park at the eastern end of the Megget Reservoir and proceeds steadily uphill over or near a number of named hills – Black Rig, Greenside Law, Shielhope Head, Notman Law, Fifescar Knowe, Dun Law, Cramalt Craig and finally Broad Law. Option: the walk can be extended to include Dollar Law (817m, another ‘Donald’) near Fifescar Knowe – adds about 2 km. From the summit of Broad Law we descend via Porridge Cairn and Wylie’s Burn to the west end of the Megget Reservoir. By means of car share we will return to the walk start point.
Circular walk, grade B+, strenuous. Full hillwalking gear including boots and poles is recommended.
