This is a circular town walk on one of the shortest days of the year starting at the end of the 12x route in Cornfield Road. Some surprising people have links to Eastbourne, from Friedrich Engels to Theresa May, Roger Moore to Prunella Scales, Debussy to George Orwell and Harold Wilson, Golda Meir and Willy Brandt. We will explore Cultural Quarter: the Towner Gallery, the Congress Theatre, Devonshire Park and Eastbourne College. We will struggle up to the top of Carlisle Road as far as the remains of Moira House School. We will then head down towards Holywell pausing at the Crows' Nest where there views towards Beachy Head and entering the Italian Garden, we will stop for lunch at the Holywell Tea Chalet. We will return along the seafront passing the Wish Tower and Peace Garden with views towards the Pier and the famous Band Stand, past some iconic hotels. We return to Brighton on the 12x bus, hoping to be home before dark.
We will meet in front of Brighton Station at stop B5 to catch the 12 x leaving at 9.36. Go upstairs for lovely views along the way and sit on the right for sea views. Relive your childhood and try to nab a front seat! The walk will start at the Cornfield Road bus stop at 10.50.
We will be walking along town streets so (good news) there will be no stiles. However, we will be crossing some roads. There is one fairly long uphill section going up Carlisle road. There are some steep steps down through the gardens to Holywell, however there is a sturdy handrail. Comfortable warm boots or trainers are recommended.
There are toilets near the beginning of the walk and by the Holywell Tea Chalet.
Please bring water or a hot drink. Sandwiches, toasties, soup of the day etc are on sale at Holywell Cafe but of course you may prefer to bring a picnic.
Guide dogs only please.
