This walk takes us through rolling countryside, an ironstone village and
ends with a spectacular view from Edge Hill, the north easterly outcrop of
the Cotswolds. The first part of the walk leads through the estate attached
to Upton House, before we take the Macmillan Way and head south towards the
small village of Alkerton. We'll make a quick diversion to Alkerton's parish
church to inspect its gargoyle, before taking the scenic route round to
Shenington, where there's a lovely village green. We'll stop there for lunch
and 'The Bell' should be open for anyone who fancies a drink. We can eat our lunch on the tables outside the pub, provided we buy some drinks. It's in a really nice spot.
The way back takes us through a mixture of open farmland and wooded paths before we come
to a viewpoint over the site of the Civil War battle at Edgehill. (The
Malverns are also visible.) From here, it's a short stroll back to our
starting point. Anyone who wants to linger in the area, can either explore
Upton House or make a short trip to 'The Castle' nearby for further
refreshments.
There are only a few stiles and no steep ascents. Most of the footpaths are
well maintained. However, there are a couple of minor paths near Alkerton
that are a bit overgrown/rough. A short stretch over ploughed fields on the return journey is also rather a slog.
Total ascent 170 metres
Length - 8.25 miles approx.
