This is a short (3 miles) country walk through woods, by burns and up a little hill: ideal for those looking to extend their repertoire to natural paths and gentle challenges without doing the distance of higher grade walks.
From Fairlie Viewpoint, we go through the mature woodland of Fairlie Glen to the castle and cross Fairlie Burn on a footbridge above one of its many waterfalls. We continue our gentle climb to meet Southannan Burn as it babbles through the woods and we cross it on a few big, safe stepping stones to emerge at neolithic cup and ring marks. Only 20 meters ascent now to the top of Diamond Hill and views of the Clyde Coast and its islands. Our descent is via Southannan Glen and back to Fairlie Viewpoint.
Although the walk is short, it has many of the features typical of natural hillside walking including mud, tree roots and little burns to delight us and keep us alert so boots and poles will be useful.
