This will be a challenging and exhilarating walk through the stunning Black Mountains, conquering four iconic peaks along the way. This 16.5-mile route features 3500 feet of ascent and promises plenty of adventure and scenic beauty.
We’ll begin at the foot of Bryn Arw, then trek onward through varied terrain—overgrown paths, rocky slopes, and steep ascents. We’ll cross the peaks of Skirrid, Deri, and finally, the formidable Sugar Loaf, which provides a steep, crumbly finish to the walk. Expect plenty of bracken, some rugged and rocky sections, and exciting climbs that’ll make this walk unforgettable!
The walk is not just about peaks; we’ll also take four well-timed breaks along the way, including a well-earned pub stop to recharge.
Prepare for a strenuous but rewarding hike, and be sure to bring sturdy footwear, plenty of water, and a sense of adventure!

This is a more demanding walk than usual (AHW) and is at the hard end of our walk categories. As such we don’t recommend this walk to anyone who’s not previously been on A walks. These walks are likely to involve some very steep ascents and descents. It’s likely there will be pathless, rough (possibly very rough) ground in high hill country. You need to be a regular hill walker used to multiple climbs and thousands of feet of “up and down” at a strong pace for several hours. There is unlikely to be a pub stop or indeed shelter in the event of poor weather. Irrespective of the weather forecast you need to be fully equipped for all conditions.
