This is another opportunity to attend this series of walks.
The 'Gainsborough Line', which opened 175 years ago on 2nd July 1849, is a railway branch line linking Marks Tey in Essex with Sudbury in Suffolk. We shall explore the countryside around this route, known to the painter Gainsborough born in Sudbury on 14 May 1727, over four walks utilising the four stations along this line.
This a farmland walk, the terrain is initially flat and then becoming gently undulating. The walk includes the villages of Little Tey, Great Tey, and the impressive Chappel Viaduct. The walk will be at a moderate to brisk pace. There are patches of tall grass, crops and nettles in places and some muddy areas.
On the date of the walk there is a Beer Festival at the pub, 15 minutes from the end of the walk.
Those travelling on trains, please use train toilets. Note Marks Tey Station toilets cannot be relied upon. Next facilities are the pub near the lunch spot.
Lunch - Picnic in Great Tey’s churchyard with opportunity for drink at the nearby pub.
Train - Liverpool St 9.36, Stratford 9.43 arr Marks Tey 10.29 (Colchester train). Return from Chappel & Wakes Colne. Buy return to Chappel & Wakes Colne.
