This is a good circuit around Galashiels, taking in a broad range of walking terrain, including woodland tracks, riverside paths, farm tracks and a small amount of tarmac. There are two testing climbs within the woods but nothing more strenuous than would classify this walk as more than moderate. There are no stiles and once the inclines are completed the views of the Eildon hills and surrounding Border country make the effort worth while. There are plenty of good opportunities to have a coffee and lunch stop along the way. The many views, the flora and fauna, the woodland trees create a lot of interest on this walk which I estimate will take about 4 hours.
The walk passes through some of the Gala Policies Community Woodland with its ancient Oak, Norway Maple and giant Redwood trees. Along the banks of the river Tweed there are good views of Abbotsford House and sight of the Eildon Hills is never far away. Much of the early part of the route follows the Southern Upland Way and the Galashiels Path. Boots and poles are recommended for this walk to help negotiate the short but sharp ascents and descents you will find along the way. Most of this route is new to Biggar Ramblers and, as it is not a race to the end, the small challenges it presents are there to be relished and conquering them ensures that feeling of satisfaction upon completion.
