Overview

This is an B+ grade, circular walk, 8.5 miles mainly on open hills with 1928 ft ascent, taking about 5 hours.

We will meet at Morrison’s, Stevenston to share cars at 8.30am for 8.40am departure.  The walk will start from the Glenafton Water Works Car Park at 9.40am.  Nearest town: New Cumnock.  At New Cumnock Roundabout (beside the Primary School) take the B741 and in 120 yards, turn left onto Afton Road (signposted for cemetery).  Follow this to the car park at the end of the road after the Glenafton Water Works and by the Afton Reservoir.

From the car park we walk the path alongside Afton Water to Afton Reservoir and up through a little bit of woodland where we begin our ascent of Cannock Hill.  We are on faint paths of soft moss and tussocky grass from this point onwards with views all day of Ayrshire’s hills, crags and farms. Just after the summit of Cannock Hill we will have a tea break then staying high head east to Blacklorg Hill.  We then head north across a saddle and straight up Blackcraig Hill (2297ft) where we will stop for lunch at the stone shelters near the trig point.  From there we are walking downhill then following a gravel path for 2.5 miles accompanied by Langlee Burn and its many waterfalls to Afton Water.

As we emerge back onto Afton Road we plan to use one car to shuttle drivers along this last couple of miles of tarmac, returning to collect passengers so that we may skip out this section of road walking.
