This walk is in a new area for Biggar Ramblers, but shows some of the best and unspoiled countryside in Dumfries and Galloway. It covers 8 miles of undulating paths, tracks and narrow roads, over fields, through woods and farms. It begins near the tiny Hamlet of Glenmidge and takes in the ruins of the 15th Century Lagg Tower.
The total length of the walk is 8 miles, which includes a 3 mile western loop. If the weather was very inclement the walk could be abbreviated to 5 miles by ignoring this loop. The full walk should take up to 5 hours.
This is an undulating walk in a new area with different landscapes and views over Dumfries and Galloway. We will have stops for coffee and a packed lunch at appropriate locations en route. There are no public toilets available. There are no stiles to climb but a number of opening gates. The terrain includes some significant inclines up and down along tarmac single roads, farm tracks, grass fields and footpaths. It is very muddy in places, so it is HIGHLY recommended that robust walking boots are worn along with gaiters. Poles, if you have them, would be a great advantage too. Along the way we pass the derelict Lagg Tower, once the seat of a 17th century tyrant. Views are plentiful and offer different perspectives of the Nith valley and Galloway to the west.
