This is a circuit of the Goyt Valley, calling at Windgather Rocks, Pym Chair, the delightful little St Joseph's Shrine, and the very atmospheric ruins of Errwood Hall (built in the 1830s, and demolished in 1934 in connection with the construction of the Fernilee Reservoir). We will also stroll along the shore of the Fernilee and Errwood Reservoirs, and see the two dams, and some of their associated engineering structures, at close quarters - these being more visible now that water levels are historically low. The route is similar to the walk of 19th January 2025, but is slightly shorter, starts at a different point (further south) with a large free car park, and uses the easier, hard-surfaced path on the east side of Fernilee Reservoir, instead of the more uneven path on the west side.
A decent coat is recommended, as Windgather Rocks is aptly named!
Bring poles if you use them, as there are some steep sections (but these are very short).
Although there are no toilets, we will pass through at least three areas of woodland on the route.
Walkers from other groups are always welcome, as are non-members wanting to sample walking with our friendly group of ramblers. Just turn up and make yourself known to the walk leader.
Please make sure you have an ICE (in Case of Emergency) card on you when out walking – you know it makes sense - if you don’t have one then ask the walk leader for one before the walk starts.
On our walks, we regret no dogs please UNLESS the walk is described as DOG FRIENDLY.
