This is a relatively easy walk on tarmac roads and paths, following the perimeter road round Cumbrae from the ferry terminal to Millport. At the north end of the island we will pass a memorial to 2 young seamen lost from HMS Shearwater before heading down the western coast past a war memorial and Fintry Bay where we will have a tea break (note that the cafe and toilets are closed).
We walk round to Millport where we will stop for lunch - you can either bring your own lunch or visit one of the cafes in the town.
We then follow the inner circuit up past the Cathedral of the Isles to the highest point on the island (this is steady ascent of approx 460ft) and follow the circuit down to meet the main road back to the ferry terminal.
As most of the walk in on roads, care should be taken, in particular on the stretches where there is no pavement.
On a clear day, we should have great views of the coast, Bute, Arran and Little Cumbrae,
Meet at Morrisons Stevenston car park for car-sharing to Largs. We will leave Morrisons at 8:50am with the aim of catching the 9:45am ferry from Largs. On arrival in Largs, I suggest turning left just after Kwik-Fit onto Charles Street, continuing down the hill and turning right onto Mackerston Place where there should be ample parking. Alternatively, you can can park in the public car park at the sea front, where there will be a parking charge.
The ferry ticket is £4.40 return. Toilets are available on the ferry and there may also be toilets available in Millport.
Please let me know if you will be attending this walk, and if so, whether you will meet at Morrisons, or go direct to Largs.
Unfortunately, this walk is not compatible with public transport.
