Starting gently from the Forrester's car park along the tram track overlooking Cymyoy's crooked church, the hike then climbs through woodland to the summit of The Gaer and descends along the Cambrian Way and Gwryne Fawr riverside, then up through the forest, across a stream and up open hill to Crug Mawr summit - arguably one of the finest viewpoints in the Black Mountains. We descend back into the valley via secluded Partrishow church, then skirt around The Gaer back to the car park. A couple of stiles along the way and plenty of sheep, lambs and ground nesting birds, so well-behaved dogs welcome if always under control and on at maximum a 2m lead.
