Welcome to Capital Walkers, the friendly London Ramblers group for people aged 40+. We walk every weekend and usually at least once during the week.
A linear walk through Hertfordshire countryside, commons, parks, a country estate and a new woodland forest. The walk starts in Harpenden initially along commons and a golf course and then through a new forest created by the Woodland Trust, named Heartwood. We will stop for lunch in Sandridge (with it's 900 year old Norman church), there are pubs in Sandridge but please bring a packed lunch.
After lunch we continue through the pretty Childwickbury country estate. We approach St Albans through countryside with great views, entering the city near the cathedral and walking through the old town. There is lots to see and do in St Albans, so you may want to stay a while before getting the train back home.
Most of the walk is along well made footpaths but sections of the walk can be muddy after rain.
The finishing time is an estimate only and will be dependent on a number of factors, such as, weather, the speed at which the group walks and the number of breaks taken.

Take the 10:18 from St Pancras International (West Hampstead Thameslink 10:28) arriving Harpenden at 10:48.
Buy a return to Harpenden.
Freedom pass and 60+ Oyster card holders buy a return from end zone 6 (Elstree & Borehamwood)
There are regular trains from St Albans back to London.
Please check travel arrangements the day before the walk for up-to-date timings, should changes occur due to industrial action or weather conditions.
