Hawkhurst, placed on a ridge in the Weald, provides an excellent starting point for this 12.5 mile walk, passing through both woodland and open country.
Setting off in a northerly direction, we make our way through Ockley, Beal's Green, then Gills Green before passing a sign indicating the location of the former Hawkhurst Railway Station. Our route the takes in Bedgebury Forest, which is a large expanse of mostly conifer trees, the area being very popular for families with dogs, mountain bikers and horse riders.
We follow a number of forest tracks, some of which could be muddy if wet weather has preceded the walk, but we will stop for our snack break here, where there are numerous benches, toilets and refreshment opportunities.
The second half of our walk is along the lines of the morning section, as we make our way back to Hawkhurst.
With about 1150 foot of ascent throughout the undulating landscape, means it falls into the moderate classification, but there is nothing overly taxing for the regular walker.
