This is a 10-mile walk of much interest, that starts from Hythe, and on our travels we visit one of the most notable landmarks within the surrounding hills, as we climb to the Radio Mast & trig point atop Tolsford Hill. We have headed to Tolsford Hill many times, but last did this traverse on a baking hot day in June 2023, and whilst we have visited since, we haven't done this complete circuit in its entirety.
Heading with early vigour out of Hythe, following the Elham Valley Way, we set forth steadily uphill to cross Sene Valley Golf Course. We pass by, the first of two trig points on this walk, situated between the fairways, but watch out for flying golf balls!
Our route continues through Sene Farm & Sene Wood, followed by Dibgate Camp, on reaching Newington and shortly afterwards Peene, we join the Dismantled Railway, before climbing further to the highest point of the walk at Tolsford Hill.
From there it is all downhill, via the Saxon Shore Way to Saltwood, then through Brockhill Country Park on our return leg to Hythe.
There will be the usual 20 minute or so picnic lunch break, as well as water stops along the route, whilst there is well situated the Red Lion Pub at the very finish of our hike. We might also be able to indulge in an ice cream at the Elham Valley Line Trust in Peene, if it is a gorgeous sunny day!
